Strategy[]

Your basic spearman is available immediately, which is a good thing, since cavalry are also available in the 12th Century. Spear troops, thus, can be a nice defense against early Pathfinder raids. Because they don't cost florins (they are known as a trash unit, being easily disposable), spearmen can be a key part of a 12th century army. However, they are notoriously vulnerable to ranged units - many archers (and skirmishers, too) have large bonuses against them. Early available Town Militia can also be seen as an early threat.

Ranged Spearmen (long pikes) have the advantage to form close-order formations of several ranks. This makes it possible to deal more damage to any melee unit attacking the formation. Late-game techs such as Close Order Drill and Drill Pikemen boost their overall stats, helpful against heavier troops. They're also fairly fast, making them decent scouts - especially with the Tracking technology researched - if you can keep them away from archers.
